Synopsis

Amber is determined to find her real parents at all costs. Everything else can wait. It seems easy enough except that it requires time and money. She spends every minute she has looking for them, but money is an issue, so besides her day job she also takes up odd jobs.

One such job lands her in a secluded cottage with a stranger. Anxious at first, Amber warms up to him only to find that he had been lying to her all along.

How will she get out of the mess she made and get back on track to finding her parents? Can she trust him?

Review by Catherine

Finding Amber is a novella, so not very long, but it still makes for a satisfying read. The story is set in India, but apart from the characters’ names, and a fleeting reference or two to Delhi, it could be set almost anywhere.

The main character, Amber, is a very likeable would-be detective. Her friend Neelam is not all she seems, and has an acrimonious workplace rivalry with a colleague called Rohit, who is allegedly stealing Neela’s ideas. Neela asks Amber to keep him occupied and out of her way.

Amber and Rohit get on very well, and go to a party in a remote cottage.

Whilst Amber is upstairs answering a phone call in private, a weather emergency arises, and when Amber reappears everyone has gone, apart from a stranger called Arjun, who is tall and scary looking. He had been detailed to stay behind and look after Amber when Rohit couldn’t find her.

Apparently all phone communications had been lost, and they would be stuck there together for a few days. Amber is very disgruntled the whole time, but Arjun is very kind and understanding. Amber tells him how she was adopted and is searching desperately for her biological parents. She is definitely beginning to warm to him. However, the bad weather clears, and they go their separate ways.

There is also a sub plot, involving male twins, Neil and Nikhil and their deceased father who was a wealthy businessman. His will mentions a sister they know nothing about, and she has been left a lot of money.

Predictable? Yes.

Wearing her detective hat, Amber goes to see Neil and Nikhil. Events get rather complicated, Arjun reappears.

I don’t want to give away any spoilers but things get rather nasty for a while. We are not sure who are goodies, and who are baddies, but eventually all becomes clear.

However, I’m pleased to say the predictable ending rounds off the book happily.
