Kami Garcia

Browsing my local Waterstones book store on a miserable, wet afternoon a few years ago, my eyes fell upon a gorgeous book cover that stood out from the others on the shelf. I had wandered into the YA section but that didn’t stop me from pulling the book from the shelf to investigate further.

This was the day that I was introduced to Kami Garcia and co-author Margaret Stohl’s book, "Beautiful Creatures", the first book in the ‘Caster Chronicles’.

Intrigued by the blurb, I decided to buy it and take a chance on a genre that I wasn’t very sure of and hadn’t read from before.

Finding I had a rare afternoon to myself, I decided to settle down and start the book right away. Hours later when my husband and kids arrive back, I realised that I had been so captivated by the book, that I had lost all sense of time.

I was hooked within the first couple of pages. I kind of surprised myself that I would enjoy a YA book as much as I did, and I can say that this was the start of my love for YA books, as I have read quite a few now.

After reading the first book, I needed to read the other three ‘Caster Chronicles’ books, in the "Beautiful Creatures" series. I loved them all and then when I heard that there had been a film made of the first book, I was eager to watch it.

Unfortunately, I wasn’t keen on the film as it didn’t correspond with my imagination of the personalities and descriptions of the characters and the setting. I also found the film missing a lot of the plot line.

After I had finished all four book in the series, I was disappointed that the story had come to an end. Then I discovered that there would be a spin off from the series, this time following Lena’s cousin Ridley and her boyfriend Link, two of the characters from the "Beautiful Creatures" series.

The two characters who were secondary characters in the "Beautiful Creatures" books, have now been given centre stage in their own "Dangerous Creatures" series. I read the first one as soon as it hit the shelves, the second "Dangerous Deception", I am waiting patiently for, which is due to be released on the 19th May 2015.

As well as the novels, there have been three e-novellas "Dark Dream", "Dangerous Dream" and "The Mortal Heart", that tag along side the ‘Caster Chronicles’ books.

Kami has also written another series, the "Legion", and a short story, "Red Run".

Kami and Margaret have written a series of books that are loved around the world. I find their writing style easy going and fixating. They manage to captivate their audience and hold them ransom until the very last page, and even then, your left wanting more.

I love "Beautiful Creatures". I am now finding the "Dangerous Creatures" series just as good, up to now. If you haven’t given them a try yet, go ahead indulge yourself – I think you might just enjoy them.

Mini Biography

Kami grew up just outside Washington D.C, but now lives in Maryland with her family. She was a teacher and a reading specialist with an MA in education for 14 years, before turning her hand to writing.

In addition to her teaching career,she was also a professional artist. She is very superstitious and has a keen interest in the paranormal.

As a teen, she was often found dressed in black and writing poetry in her notebook, similarities to ‘Lena’ in "Beautiful Creatures".
