Katy Swartz and her mum Kellie, are the new folks in town. It was Kellie’s idea to move them to West Virginia, telling Katy they needed to make a fresh start after the death of her father.
Katy’s mum was concerned about her having no friends when she started at the local high school, so encouraged her to get out and make some.
Knowing that there are two teenagers living next door, Katy tries them first. Needing directions to the local grocery store gave her enough reason to knock on their neighbour’s door. After asking the lad that answered the door for directions, she’s left with the opinion that they have moved next door to the most obnoxious, rude, big headed boy in the world, Daemon Black, who also happens to be the most gorgeous boy she has ever seen, with mesmerising green eyes.
Whilst shopping in the grocery store, Katy runs in to Dee, Daemon’s sister. Dee tells her to ignore her brother as he’s ‘just moody’, and that she would like to be friends. Daemon isn’t happy about this and tells Katy to stay away from his sister.
Dee tells Daemon that he needs to be nice to Katy and apologise, as she really likes her. She suggests taking Katy swimming in the lake, to say sorry. Daemon can’t say no though as Dee has taken his car keys and is refusing to give them back to him unless he does as she asks.
After katy and Daemon argue one day, she runs away from him and straight into the path of an on coming truck, Daemon freezes time to protect her, and this is the beginning of Katy’s discovery into the world of the ‘Luxen’.
He tells her about himself and Dee, about how they are aliens called Luxen from the planet Lux. He also tells her they have a problem. Whilst saving her life he has placed a trace on her. She is lit up so that every other Luxen on Earth can see her, oh and the ‘Arum’, who happen to want to kill all the Luxen and will use Katy to get to them.
Now Katy and Daemon must stick together if he’s to protect her and his family from being killed, a family he would do anything for to keep them alive, even kill for them.
Review
Well, what can I say except, ‘wow’. I absolutely love this book, the whole series actually!
Now before I read this book I can honestly say – aliens, not my thing. Never contemplated reading a book with aliens in before, but when I saw this book, something drew me in and I had this urge to read it. I’m so glad that I did.
The book is like an ‘A’ ride at the theme park. It starts you off slowly but before you’ve had time to take a few breaths your whizzing through the book, and the pace gets quicker and quicker. There is so much packed into the story. From fight scenes, romance, sexual chemistry, paranormal activity, and wit – lots and lots of wit.
The dialogue between Katy and Daemon will have you in stitches. They work so well together and really bounce off each other. Yes Daemon is moody and arrogant, but as well as being hot, he’s also caring and loving and will do anything to protect those he loves.
Katy is an average girl. She loves reading and even has her own book blogging site. She is smart, head strong and can hold her own in dangerous situations.
Then there’s Dee, she is so sweet, and quirky (she reminds me of ‘Luna Lovegood’ in Harry Potter). She loves anything if it’s pink, and is completely daft.
I’ve heard the book has been likened to the ‘Twilight Saga’. I haven’t read the books, but have see the films. I can see where they are coming from, but I feel that this book really holds its own.
It is phenomenally good and is hard to put down. This was one of those books that once it had ended – on a cliff hanger – I had to start the second one right away, luckily I had it prepared.
With everything going on in the book, you will find yourself drifting into a world where aliens are amongst us, and I wouldn’t mind bumping into an alien if he looked like Daemon!
I loved this book so much, it had to go into my Top Ten Books.
