Review by Stacey

The Story Shop: Detective Dash! is a children’s first chapter book comprising of three distinct stories which feature recurring characters. Each story is four chapters long.

Puddletown High Street looks like a normal street except for one shop, The Story Shop run by Wilbur and Fred Ferret. Here the folk come to be anything they want to be. They get dressed up in a costume and then the story pot is filled with just the right ingredients and then they ‘pop off’ to embark on a thrilling adventure.

One morning when the owners arrive a sloth is inside asleep. Snoozy Suzy as she is known to her friends is about to go on a fabulous mystery adventure when she dons the sleuths outfit.

The initial premise reminded me of the old children’s TV show, Mr. Ben in which he would enter a shop and change into a different person for the day and have adventures – Yes, I’m that old to remember it!

The stories are easy to read and each contains charming black and white artwork that brings the stories to life. I love that the reader gets three stories that follow on from one another which they can read continually or put down and read one a day, etc.

The Story Shop: Detective Dash! strikes a balance suitable for both advanced readers and those venturing into the realm of chapter books for the first time. Each story is captivating, interesting, and good fun and engages the reader the whole way through.
