Ronaldo rocks, yet again.

It is summertime in Beresford. Ronaldo and Rudi are beside themselves with excitement: Monty the Moose, the most incredible Magician in the whole world is performing at Rudi’s birthday party!

But before the festivities begin, there’s the important matter of The Reindeer Flyover, an ancient tradition of The Reindeer Flying Academy that marks the end of school term. But Rudi might not be able to fly. He has injured his hoof and refuses to see Doctor Kloppen. Rudi is terrified of needles and, rumour has it, the Doctor’s needle is the size of a rocket!

Meanwhile, Ronaldo meets celebrity baker Mrs Sorensson and offers to deliver her cakes to ‘Carrot’s ‘N’ Cakes’ bakery before flying school. The weather is hot so Ronaldo rushes through the forest so he can deliver the cakes before the icing melts. But trouble is lurking in the woods. Dasher and his menacing brothers, Comet and Prancer, are hiding in the bushes. Waiting for Ronaldo!

Review new 2021

Ronaldo: Rudi’s Birthday Extravaganza is the third book in the Ronaldo the Flying Reindeer series by Maxine Sylvester and the second book from the series that I have read. This time in the town of Beresford summer has arrived and it is scorching.

Ronaldo is getting ready for the important Reindeer Flyover and looking forward to Rudi’s upcoming birthday party. However, Rudi has a sore swollen hoof and needs to go to see the doctor but he’s frightened that the doctor will give him a needle so he locks himself in his room. With Ronaldo’s help, Rudi comes out and for helping Rudi’s mum takes them to ‘Carrot’s ‘N’ Cakes’ bakery where Ronaldo has the most delicious piece of carrot cake.

On his way home Ronaldo helps out a Doe he’s not seen before, it turns out it is the baker Mrs. Sorensson who currently has a bad hip and is struggling to get her shopping and take her cakes to the bakery each day so Ronaldo offers to help her too.

There is so much going on in Beresford, including Rudi’s dad being out of work when the Gingerbread Factory closes and Vixen announcing his workshop that will be starting soon for a select number of reindeer.

What I loved about this book is children will be able to see themselves in the characters. Ronaldo is caring and helpful, he’s also a little bit naughty sometimes and greedy at others which certainly taught him a lesson not to eat five lollipops and three pieces of carrot cake – His stomach was bad for a long time eating that much.

The story is fun and engaging and the illustrations though black and white are beautiful and brought the characters to life.

The book has plenty of life lessons for children and is exceptionally enjoyable from beginning to end and will most definitely give them the giggles. There are certainly more stories to come for Ronaldo and his friends and I can’t wait to read them.
